Here’s What Drew Gasps at TedX Boston

Massachusetts has larger racial voter turnout gaps than Mississippi. We’re one of only two states where the legislature and the governor don’t have to publicly share how decisions are made. We have the least competitive elections in the entire country – over 60% of our elections are uncontested. No choice means no accountability.

If you’re a longtime supporter of Partners In Democracy, you may be familiar with these harrowing statistics. But when I spoke at TedX Boston recently, before an audience at GBH’s studios that included leaders from across Greater Boston, they drew gasps:

This crisis is also an opportunity. American democracy was born here in Massachusetts. Massachusetts consistently sets new standards for the nation from civil rights to universal healthcare. We have a chance to do so again – to create a blueprint for democracy renovation that will inspire other states and Congress to act – not just for us, but for kids and grandkids, and for America’s next 250 years. 

A blueprint only matters if someone starts laying bricks. This November, our Democracy on the Ballot agenda – All-Party Primaries, Election Day Registration, and Public Records Reform – is how we lay the foundation for democracy renovation.
