Our Challenge

One stark example - 2020 and 2022 US Census data show voter registration below the national average for Black, Hispanic, and Asian American citizens in Massachusetts.

Partners In Democracy is building nationwide partnerships and exploring how we can drive democracy renovation efforts forward in states around the country — starting by focusing our efforts here at home in Massachusetts. While our state prides itself on our history as the birthplace of American democracy, today, we’ve got serious gaps in how well our democracy works, and who it serves. Massachusetts earns a C on the Leadership Now Democracy Scorecard, and is…

37th

in the country for the gap between BIPOC population and BIPOC legislative representation

41st

in the country for monetary competitiveness for candidates

48th

in the country for the gap between white and BIPOC turnout

50th

in the country for state legislature effectiveness

Voter turnout is in a steady decline and, since 2020, the majority of voters in Massachusetts have chosen not to enroll in a political party. We need to empower people to fix governance so that we can achieve inclusive, responsive representation and equip our institutions to meet our most pressing challenges.

We begin our work in Massachusetts, the cradle of democracy. Despite this, today Massachusetts earns a C on the Leadership Now Democracy Scorecard.

Our Work

Using our 360° Democracy Standard, we pursue democracy renovation to deliver a system where everyone is included and has real power to shape our shared future, where our institutions are resilient in the face of extremism, where our representatives are responsive, accountable to us, and deliver on the big issues in people’s lives.

This is how we get

Justice by means of democracy.
